Insurance

E-mail Print PDF

The purpose of this section is to outline what insurance you get by becoming a member of KCLMC. These only apply once you have paid your membership fees. We are covered by two organisations: The BMC and KCLSU. The extent of each type of cover is considered below.

KCLMC is a BMC affiliated club, which means that all our members have Liability Insurance of up to £10,000,000. An example of when this would apply is if on a trip one of our members pulls off a rock on a crag, it hits another person and they decide to sue for damages. More information can be found here: BMC Liability Insurance Info.

An important point to mention here is that the Liability Insurance does not offer you cover if you injure yourself. This is called Personal Accident Disability Cover and is NOT included in affiliate membership; only individual BMC members have this.

HOWEVER, KCLSU has insurance through Endsleigh to cover personal accidents, see the KCLSU section below for more information.

"Should I become an Individual BMC Member?"

This costs around £17 for students and has lots of benefits which are described here: BMC Membership Benefits.

"Should I take out additional insurance when going on a KCLMC trip?"

BMC Travel and Activity insurance has limited benefits for UK trips. For example, there are no personal costs associated with rescue, medical care or overseas issues such as lost passports when in the UK. One positive for taking out extra insurance would be Personal Belongings insurance, covering the cost of your equipment if it gets lost or stolen. Whether you want to take out this additional insurance is a matter of individual choice.

Finally on the BMC; they have produced a very helpful set of Insurance Club Guidelines.

As a ratified club of KCLSU, KCLMC pays KCLSU £3 per member towards your insurance. This means that you are ONLY covered by this insurance if you have paid your membership fee.

KCLSU has a Platinum Elite Personal Accident Insurance Plan with Endsleigh which covers all of the KCLSU ratified sports clubs at King's. Here is a Summary of Cover document, which outlines to what extent you are covered.

Basically, this policy provides personal accident cover up to the amounts stated in the summary of cover. It also covers travel to and from an activity.

If you want any more information then get in touch with the committee and hopefully we can point you in the right direction!

The BMC and KCLMC recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with

a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware

of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions.
