Meet the Committee!

JEN – President

Jen, the President and Matriarch of all things climbing (providing it doesn’t involve getting too cold or walking), is one of the most active club members. As a veteran member in her 4th year of medicine (fifth year in the KCLMC), she lacks rivals for experience. Last year as Team Captain she exceeded her role, helping our team attain new heights with 6th place at BUBC. Focusing mainly on sport and bouldering, Jen has notched up a number of F6c’s outdoors, better than most of the blokes can do! Although it isn’t her thing, Jen has also led trad to VS. Indoors she placed 6th in BUBC and 14th in BUCS in 2008. Watching Jen climb is a lesson in superlative technique (without the usual thrutching) and testament to the fact that size needn’t hold you back! Jen is always coming on club trips, helping organise ventures to the Alps, Mallorca and Siurana along with trips in the UK. Just don’t insult her rats!

TIM – Vice President

Tim is in his second year of a Maths PhD after doing his undergraduate studies at Bath University. He started climbing when he came to King’s two years ago and is one of our keenest beans – always at the wall on Wednesdays before everyone else! Despite not being a climbing veteran, Tim is naturally able and has progressed up the ladder very quickly. He’s a keen and solid boulderer who has put in many great performances in numerous competitions under KCLMC’s name. Tim is a qualified remote first-aider.

MAEVE – Treasurer

Maeve is another fourth year medic – the loveliest in existence. She also started climbing in those heady days of first- yearism and has represented King’s excellently in national competitions. She is the biggest fan of slab climbing I know and is famous for bruising like a peach and burning like a lobster! Maeve has led up to HVS in the Peaks and 6b+ in Siurana. She’ll be taking good care of our accounts this year, a task not to be underestimated because at KCLMC we like to spend!

HARIS – Secretary

Haris is doing an intercalated degree in Psychology this year. We think it will do him good – he is the craziest person you’ll ever meet. Known for his bizarre takes on enjoyable drinks and drinking practices, he will probably instigate a few jolly games down in the Waterfront after climbing. You’ll know it’s him – he’ll be wearing some variety of tweed, and a cravat. He might also have a cane. Jokes aside, Haris is a valued member of our committee. He enjoys all kinds of climbing but winter mountaineering especially. His role this year is as secretary and we look forward to having all our meetings chaired by him.

PETE – Trips Secretary

Pete Brook is the man to ask about all our trips this year. When he's not booking mini-buses or munching on curdled Bailey's he's getting on with second year of Pharmacology. Always up for going to the Castle or the Arch, Pete is looking to step it up this year and is aiming to hit V5 by Christmas. Also passionate about photography, you may see him running between boulders with a 'Holga' plastic camera that is his pride and joy! Pete accompanied us to the Alps last summer, and edited the video of the trip (see the link on the left). Luckily he realised the error of his ways with the orange hair...

ANDY – Social Secretary

This is the second year running that Andy, an intercalating medic, has been our Social Sec. He organises wonderful events for us like Brick Lane curries and “Pimm’s in Potter’s Fields”, as well as the usual pub crawls and post-climbing pints. In our club, we think there’s more to climbing than the actual climbing – we like to get everyone together and have some fun, too. And Andy is the perfect candidate to get you psyched up for all the London fun the capital has to offer. In the Winter months you’ll see him sporting a rainbow beanie – permanently. And don’t be fooled by the flowing locks – he’s not even vegetarian!

MARTIN – Gear Secretary

Martin, spawned from the Lake District’s very own Kendal, is the most talented climber KCLMC has seen in the last decade. He is well versed in the ways of ice climbing which he climbs to grade IV, rock routes (E1 trad and F7b+ sport) and bouldering (V7) and has boosted our performance massively in all the competitions we have entered. Martin’s your man when it comes to questions regarding buying shoes or harnesses, and when you want to borrow gear from us to do some climbing on your own or within your own group. Martin is a studying his second year of medicine and is a qualified first aider.

HANNES – Team Captain

KCLMC enter quite a few climbing competitions – the biggest being “BUCS” – British University & College’s Sports. We have numerous teams and Hannes’ job as Team Captain is to manage them and help things run smoothly. Hannes is a talented climber, and being a Swede, he’s not a bit scared of the English cold that drives so many of us away from those January weekends. If you’re at all interested in competing for King’s – and don’t think you have to be the best out there because we have numerous teams – talk to Hannes about what the options are.

OLLIE – Safety Officer

Ollie, lovingly known as The Hulk for his tendency to be overcome by the red mist when he fails to complete a route, is the most graceful climber I’ve seen. He has a natural affinity for climbing and it helps that he’s rather erm, built I think the cool kids say these days. Ollie has been on many a winning team for our competitions and we would never have done so well without him. His role this year is actually pretty significant – Safety Officers have to write detailed risk assessments of all our activities and keep us safe by moaning at us when we forget to wear our helmets!

ED – Alumni Officer (Honorary Post)

Ed was the last committee’s VP and secretary. He is responsible, with Becks, for most of the club’s successes last year. Ed has now graduated in War Studies and will probably be studying his Masters at St. Andrews where he has been unconditionally accepted. Ed will be coordinating the presence of other KCL alumni if they wish to join us on any of our trips. He is also geographically perfectly positioned for some Scottish climbing adventures! We have many King’s alumni who continue climbing with us. If you’ve studied at King’s – even many years ago – and want to come climbing with us, we’d love to hear from you.

EDD – French Ambassador (Honorary Post)

Long Edd is sadly continuing his studies in France this year. We will miss him so much – he’s a wonderful guy and a pretty amazing climber, too! He has been a solid feature of our competition teams and we wish him luck in his French & Film Studies in Aix-en Provence. I suppose he’s who you call if you’re thinking of visiting that part of the world!

EMLYN – Webgeek (Honorary Post)

This website will be kept in the careful hands of Emlyn the Gremlin, who built it from scratch. Grem graduated last year in Pharmacogenomics. With the world now his oyster, Grem could and probably will pursue many of the various paths in which his talents lie. We wish him luck and hope he’ll not be too busy for the occasional climb with us!

BECKS – Ex-President

This page wouldn’t be complete without giving our out-going president, Becks, a quick mention. A graduate in English Language, she will be working in London and living with Jen and Helena, so expect to see her around a lot at the wall! Beck ran the club faultlessly for us last year we owe her a big THANK YOU!!
